School Info

Swedish Institute, dedicated to a natural approach to health care since its inception in 1916, celebrates its 95th anniversary this year!

Founded by Captain Theodore Melander, a native of Sweden, the school was initially called the Swedish Institute for Physiotherapy. It taught a system of massage therapy, exercise and external applications popular in Europe at the time.

Swedish Institute has maintained its focus on massage therapy through the years, and has the oldest Massage Therapy Program in the country.

In 1996 Swedish Institute broadened its commitment to natural health care education when it initiated a three-year Master's level Acupuncture Program.

In 2011 we began to offer new programs in Advanced Personal Training, Medical Assistant, Nursing and Surgical Technologist.

In addition, Swedish Institute offers Professional Continuing Education courses that help graduates maintain and refine their skills.

Programs Offered:

  • Advanced Personal Training
The Personal Training Program curriculum is infused with the spirit of those early fitness classes, because Vincent Metzo, Dean of the program, believes the history of the field is as important as the most up-to-date research. Our personal trainer courses provide students with a strong academic, technical and business understanding for the profession of fitness training. This includes the study of basic and advanced topics in exercise science, and also addresses client-centered practice skills, culminating in a final externship experience.
  • Massage Therapy
Founded in 1916, Swedish Institute has the oldest Massage Therapy Program in the country. Its dynamic curriculum develops strong skills in both Western and Eastern styles of massage, a solid knowledge base in the biosciences, and an emphasis on integration of these components into practical applications in classes and clinics.
  • Surgical Technologist
The Surgical Technologist Program will prepare students to become an integral part of the surgical team in a variety of perioperative settings. Students will develop an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology, surgical procedures, and safe and effective conditions required for surgery. Through laboratory and hands-on practice, they will learn procedures for creating and maintaining sterile conditions, setting up the operating room, and the preparation of equipment and instruments in advance of surgery. They will also study medical law and ethics, communication skills and health psychology, in order to be capable of delivering patient-centered care.
